dino, at first glance, would be described by many as kind hearted-- a ray of sunshine. a carefree, family loving twenty two year old man. he likes long drives in his ferrari, spending time with family and friends, shopping-- the works. he's the kind of person you see laughing it up with groups of friends around him, a person that's difficult to actually dislike deep down and not get along with. hell, he participates in snowball fights and games with kids nearly ten years younger than him-- it doesn't stop the never ending smiles and laughs. plus, he likes kids! dino is a dependable young man, always at the ready to help those in need, and perhaps make your day just a bit brighter.
but, a thing: what dino's very pro at doing is masking all the troubles in his life. acting. behind the curtains, backstage at dino's life, lies the important fact that he is a mafia boss: the tenth head of the cavallone family, leading over five thousand members. you can imagine-- it's a difficult spot to carry on. people die. people he's responsible for, close comrades who depend on him sometimes die. him and his family constantly have to watch their backs, be prepared for the worst. when a door opens without expecting it, dino's first instinct is to reach for and aim a gun.
the occupation can weigh heavily on one's shoulders. nevertheless, dino carries his responsibilities with his head held high and almost always, a smile on his face. when something happens and things get serious, dino knows when it's time to straighten his face and get things done. he knows when it's time to get down down to business-- or if it's time to play. during these times, especially when his family and friends fall into the mix of danger, does he truly shine through as an excellent, selfless leader.
this brings me to his family: dino is very devoted to his men. their protection is one of his high priorities. so much so, that when they aren't around, the blond's physical motor skills go from agile to near zero. a running gag throughout the manga is how klutzy dino can be without his family in the vicinity-- tripping down the stairs, tripping on himself, spilling his food, getting tangled in or whipping himself with his own whip . . . the list, it grows. his skill drops by fifty percent, and he isn't even aware of the problem, usually blaming his klutziness on things like his shoes.
while clumsy, it by no means dino is completely useless! when he first stepped in as boss, the cavallone family was financially ruined. dino was the one who saved and lifted the family out of the very horrid debt, and is responsible for where and what it is today: a strong, rich, and the third most influential family in the mafia. if there's one thing he doesn't like, is endangering other's, or seeing people getting hurt. dino is ranked number one mafioso in the world to care for the well being of his subordinates and civilians. with (a) family member(s) around, the man is a fighter and a tough opponent that can hold his own. he has a quick mind and intellect on his side, reading and reacting to situations promptly, coming up with plans quickly before some even notice the problem.
back in the day, when he was sawada tsunayoshi's age, and suddenly thrust into the world of mafia-- he didn't want it. in fact, he was just like tsuna. he wanted nothing to do with the family, he was clumsy and no good. but, after years of training and private tutoring from the well known vongola hitman reborn, dino grew into a respectable man who accepted his duties with new eyes, and became know to the mafia world as " bucking horse dino".
